Missing teeth can pose a big problem to your health. Aside from making it difficult to chew and talk, many people experience lower self-esteem due to missing teeth. If you happen to be missing teeth and are interested in a solution, you may want to consider dentures.

Different Types of Dentures

There are two types of dentures:

  • Partial Dentures: This kind of denture is used when only a few teeth on either your upper or lower jaw are missing, or when a full set of dentures cannot be used.
  • Complete Dentures: When all teeth on the upper or lower jaw are missing, a complete set of dentures is used. This is generally a simple and easy-to-use fix.

Denture Maintenance

Given that dentures are situated in your mouth for the majority of the day, you must take care to clean them regularly and thoroughly. Use a soft brush with soap and water, or a specialized denture-cleaning agent to remove unwanted bacteria. Be sure to clean both the inside and outside of the denture.

Concerns

Most people get dentures to make it easier to both talk and eat. Yet, some have concerns about the denture slipping and making it difficult to do these things. There are many adhesive products on the market, such as Poligrip, that help keep dentures in place.

Patients with dentures must also remember to take the dentures out before going to sleep. Recent studies have shown that leaving dentures in at night increases the risk of developing pneumonia, especially among the elderly.

We’re Here to Help

There are both positive and negative aspects to dentures. You may be interested in another option, such as permanent dental implants. Take some time to think about your current dental needs, as well as your budget, in order to come to an informed decision.
